Regimental Births, Marriages and Deaths

In addition to the civil registration which began in 1837 (see Certificates), the various Regiments of the British Army also kept their own records of Births, Marriages and Deaths. There are a variety of indexes, which cover these events all over the world;

Regimental Births Index 1761-1924
Chaplain's Returns of Births 1796-1905
Army Returns (Marriages) 1796-1955
Marine Deaths 1837-1965
There are also Consular Registers of all Births, Marriages and Deaths registered at the various British Consuls, from 1849 onwards

These indexes are held at the FRC, and are not indexed on any electronic media. We are happy to manually search these for you on your behalf, but we would need to know the following;

  • Your ancestor's name
  • The Regiment. (This is essential, unless they had a very unusual surname)
  • If possible, where they were stationed
  • The date range
  • If you can provide the information above, our initial search costs GBP5, and we would report back with findings. Any certificate you may wish to order costs GBP11.50

    There are a couple of other points to note. The first is that not ALL events were recorded this way, and certainly if your ancestor was stationed in England or Wales post 1837, it is better to check the regular indexes first. The second is that unlike civilian certificates (which are scanned from the original entries), Regimental/Army certificates are transcribed and typed.
