By the time of her birth her father, Henry DIAMOND was 1 CONC no longer working as an Oil & Colour Salesman. His occupation is recorded 1 CONC as Drysalter's Storeman. The child's mother's maiden name is recorded and 1 CONC Elizabeth STEVENSON. Henry and Elizabeth's marriage, according to the 1 CONC record, was 1895, April 19th Glasgow. The record is signed: Henry 1 CONC Diamond, father. 1 CONT Elizabeth Anderson Stevenson Diamond was christened with the 1 CONC surnames of her mother and maternal grandmother. Called Liz by her 1 CONC family, her husband didn't like the name and "renamed" her Betty. Betty 1 CONC was a tiny (4'8"), stoudy woman which wavy dark mahogany hair, hazel 1 CONC eyes, and a gentle, kind manner. Being the eldest girl in a family of 1 CONC twelve, after four years of formal schooling, she had to quit to care for 1 CONC her siblings. Betty, like many woman of her day, began learning the 1 CONC womanly arts of knitting, sewing, crocheting and cooking in 1 CONC pre-adolescence. When learning to paint with oils, her father, also adept 1 CONC with oils and brush, would turn her work upside down and eye it 1 CONC critically. Work which jarred his senses upside downside, was X-ed with 1 CONC swift strokes of a ochre-laden brush. Prior to her marriage, Betty cut 1 CONC her almost waist-length tresses and was shunned by her angry father for 1 CONC over a week. 1 CONT Betty met Robert at the LDS (Mormon) temple in Montreal. Her family 1 CONC and friends advised against the marriage because Robert had been born a 1 CONC blue baby -- an "uncurable" heart condition at the time. Although Robert 1 CONC was, according to Betty, an accountant, following their marriage, they 1 CONC moved to Providence in the belief that the climate would be better for 1 CONC his health. There he worked as a chauffeur/gardener and she as a 1 CONC cook/housekeeper. From time-to-time they would treat themselves to an 1 CONC outing... test driving a new car! Whenever Betty's cooking didn't turn 1 CONC quite as anticipated, she would tell her employer that it was the 1 CONC "Canadian way". The couple's firstborn, a son, died in infancy in 1 CONC Providence. Two years after their marriage, while Betty was pregnant with 1 CONC her daughter, Robert died of heart failure and Betty returned to her 1 CONC parents' apartment at 5164 9th avenue in Rosemount, Montreal, Quebec, 1 CONC Canada. 1 CONT Betty was badly crippled with rheumatoid arthritis in her hands and 1 CONC feet. As it worsened, the number of Frost's 222 she took increased. The 1 CONC pain-killers took their toll and a few months before her 75th birthday, 1 CONC she died of kidney failure. Betty's last address was 794 Atwater Avenue, 1 CONC Montreal, Quebec, the home of her sister Marion Blake. 1 CONT Betty is buried in the 27 sq. ft lot her sister Janet Diamond 1 CONC purchased on Aug 30, 1974 -- Lot: 153 Number: 229 -- for $121.50.
