Old Newspaper Reports

If your ancestor was involved in anything news-worthy, even on a local level, old newspapers can be an excellent source of background material. Usually for family historians this means an event of some type. Local newspapers can also provide extra detail on criminal activities, and so can be especially useful if your ancestor was tried for an offence. It can be the most cost-effective way to discover more about your ancestor, and sometimes includes information which is not available anywhere else. We are regular visitors to the British Library Newspaper Library at Colindale, and can search for you. Newspapers survive from the late 1700s, right up to the present day - so they can be useful even for more recent events like marriages and deaths.

All we would need from you is the following:
  • Your ancestor's name
  • The event - marriage, death, trial etc
  • The town where it took place
  • The date
  • We operate a flat-fee to search the relevant local press for the date you supply and provide you with a transcript, and photocopy, of any relevant report. Please note we do not advise speculative searches, and we do NOT supply copies of old newspapers - only transcripts and copies of relevant entries.
